Music Portfolio Pathway for
University Admissions
Turning classical music into a standout extracurricular for Ivy League, Oxbridge and leading universities
SIMA Classics works with academically strong students who play classical music to a high level. We help them develop it into a distinctive extracurricular that strengthens their university application, whatever subject they plan to study. We design and manage each student's performance activity, international experience, research and portfolio so that their music shows depth, commitment and intellectual curiosity.
Assessment and planning → Competitions and performances → Masterclasses/Musical Activities in Europe → Interdisciplinary research → Recordings and documentation → Music résumé and portfolio → University application materials
Who This Programme Is For
-
Students who want their application to stand out in a highly competitive admissions process
-
Academically strong students aged 14–18 who play a classical instrument to a high level alongside their studies
-
Students who want their music to show depth, commitment and intellectual curiosity, not just a list of grades and prizes
-
Students who want to connect their competitions, lessons and performances into one clear and memorable story
-
Students who want to show a meaningful link between their music and their intended major, such as psychology, neuroscience, computer science, economics or history
Admissions officers read thousands of strong applications. They rarely count years of activity or numbers of prizes. What stands out is depth of engagement, the scale of a student's activities, and how well the student can explain what those experiences mean to them.

The Three-Year Pathway
Year 1 – Foundation
Setting Direction and Building Early Achievements
We assess the student's current level, academic goals and target universities, then design an annual activity plan that fits around their studies. Competition preparation and coaching, monthly online reviews, and recommendations for European masterclasses and workshops build a strong foundation.
Year 2 – International Experience
Broadening Experience and Deepening Engagement
Students build their competition and performance record and gain international experience through lessons and masterclasses with faculty from leading European music institutions. We also create professional recordings and a documented record of their activities.
Year 3 – Portfolio Completion
Bringing It All Together
Students complete a student-led research project linking music with their intended field of study, mentored by doctoral researchers at a leading UK conservatoire. They also finalise a music résumé and portfolio to support their personal statement, essays and supplements. Where appropriate, we also explore faculty recommendation letters and publication opportunities.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this programme for students who want to study music?
No. It's designed mainly for students applying for academic subjects who want music to be a key strength of their application. Each plan connects the student's music with their intended field of study.
Can students start in Grade 10 or 11 (Year 11 or 12)?
Yes. Based on the student's starting point, current level and application timeline, we propose a condensed roadmap focused on the most important steps. Starting earlier, though, allows more time to build up performances, research and a documented record.
Will this take time away from academic studies?
The programme is designed around a demanding academic schedule. Most activity happens through monthly online sessions, with European activities planned around school holidays.
Are activities in Europe compulsory?
No. They are optional and adjusted to the student's level, academic schedule, budget, whether a parent can travel with them, and the schedules of host institutions.
Can students receive lessons or recommendation letters from European faculty?
Depending on the student's level, readiness and goals, and on faculty and institution availability, we can arrange lessons or masterclass places with external professors. Recommendation letters may be possible where a professor has taught the student directly. They are always written at the professor's own discretion and cannot be guaranteed.
Do you work with university consulting agencies?
Yes. We work alongside consulting agencies as a specialist extracurricular partner. Their team leads the application strategy, and we develop the music profile that supports it.
What should we prepare for the first consultation?
It helps to have the following ready, though it's fine if not everything is complete:
-
A list of current or recent repertoire
-
The student's school year and a brief academic overview
-
Intended subject or career direction
-
Target countries and types of universities
-
Existing materials, such as performance videos, competition results, concert programmes, projects or writing
